How Old Are You in 2nd Grade?

Last updated June 18, 2026

In the United States, children in 2nd grade are usually 7 to 8 years old. Most students start second grade at age 7 and turn 8 at some point during the school year.

The typical age for each elementary grade

Ages shift a little depending on a child’s birthday and the school’s cutoff date, but here is the usual range in the US:

GradeTypical age
Kindergarten5–6 years old
1st grade6–7 years old
2nd grade7–8 years old
3rd grade8–9 years old
4th grade9–10 years old
5th grade10–11 years old

Why the age can vary

A few things affect how old a child is in 2nd grade:

  • Birthday and cutoff dates. Most states require a child to turn 5 by a date in late summer or fall to start kindergarten, which sets the pace for every grade after. A child with a fall birthday may be among the oldest in the class; a summer birthday, among the youngest.
  • Redshirting. Some families choose to start kindergarten a year later, so a few 2nd graders may be 9.
  • Grade skipping or repeating. A small number of students are accelerated or held back a year.

What do 2nd graders learn?

Second grade is a big year for becoming an independent reader and a more fluent mathematician. In math, students master addition and subtraction within 100 (including regrouping), place value to the hundreds, telling time, and counting money. In reading and writing, they build fluency, comprehension, sight words, spelling, and basic grammar.
