What is a comma?
A comma (,) is a pause mark. It tells the reader to pause briefly — shorter than a period.
Commas in a list
When a sentence lists three or more things, commas separate them — including one before the final and.
I like dogs, cats, and birds. We packed shoes, a towel, and a swimsuit.
Commas in dates
A comma goes between the day and the year.

Commas in greetings and closings
Letters use a comma after the greeting and after the closing.

Read the sentence aloud. Wherever your voice pauses between items, there’s usually a comma.
