Beyond retelling: main idea and details
In 2nd grade, comprehension grows from retelling to analysis. Readers learn to separate the big idea from the supporting facts.
Main idea vs. supporting details
- Main idea — what the text is mostly about (the big picture).
- Details — the specific facts that support it.
Example: “Spiders spin webs to catch food. They make new webs every day.” Main idea: spiders spin webs. Detail: they make new webs every day.
Sequencing events
Stories and instructions happen in an order. Watch for sequence words:
- first → then → next → finally → last
Example: “First we filled the cups. Then we planted seeds. Finally, we watered them.”
When you re-read, check your answer against the order clues.
Making predictions
Before and during reading, ask: “What do I think will happen next?” Use the clues in the text and your own experience. Then keep reading to see if your prediction was right.
The 2nd grade routine
- Read the passage once for the big picture.
- Re-read to find details and answer questions.
- Look for order words to retell events.
- Predict what comes next.
