The 2nd grade word list
By 2nd grade, the sight word list grows to about 300 words. These include the little function words that glue sentences together:
after, again, because, been, before, could, every, first, from, give, going, great, have, just, kind, learn, many, most, new, old, once, only, over, people, put, read, right, said, same, should, their, then, through, too, under, very, want, were, when, where, which, while, your
Look-alike words
Some sight words look and sound nearly the same. Learn the difference:
- there (a place) / their (belonging to them) / they’re (they are)
- then (next) / than (comparing)
- where (a place question) / were (past of are)
- through (across) / though (even if)
Reading with fluency
2nd grade readers should read in phrases, not word by word. Sight words help you glide over the little words and land on the important ones.
Try reading: “The train went through the tunnel because it was faster.” Recognize the sight words instantly → the sentence flows.
The weekly routine
- Review the old list (2 minutes, daily).
- Add 5 new words — see, spell, write, use.
- Read aloud a short passage, tracking fluency.
- Timed challenge — read the same word list and try to beat last week.
How to practice at home
- Speed read: time reading a word list and chart the improvement.
- Fill the blank: “I stayed inside ___ it rained.” (because)
- Build a sentence: use two or three sight words to make a longer sentence.
- Proofread hunt: circle look-alike words (there/their) in any printed text.
