Reading to learn
Third grade is the famous “reading to learn” year: children read harder passages and must show they understand — using evidence from the text.
Cause and effect
- Cause = why something happens.
- Effect = what happens.
Signal words: because, since, so, therefore, as a result.
Example: “Because the rain did not stop, the game was cancelled.” Cause: the rain didn’t stop. Effect: the game was cancelled.
Character traits with evidence
A trait is a word that describes a character: brave, kind, stubborn, curious. You can’t just say a character is kind — you must prove it with evidence.
Example: “Maya shared her snacks with everyone.” → Evidence for generous.
Main idea, refreshed
Re-read the passage and ask “what is this mostly about?” The main idea is broader than any single detail. Then check: do most sentences support this idea?
Citing text evidence
The 3rd grade rule: your answer must be in the text. When you answer, find the sentence that supports it and quote or point to it.

- First read: get the main idea.
- Second read: hunt for evidence and details.
- Answer each question by pointing to the text.
- Ask “cause or effect?” when you see why/what-happened language.
