What are synonyms and antonyms?
A synonym is a word that means the same as another word. Big and large are synonyms. An antonym is a word that means the opposite. Hot and cold are antonyms.
- Synonym → same → big / large
- Antonym → opposite → hot / cold
The trick to remembering them
Use the first letter as a memory hook:
- Synonym = Same
- Antonym = Against (opposite)
How to find a synonym
Ask yourself: “What’s another word that means the same thing?”
Example: “The box was heavy.” What else could we call it? Answer: weighty, massive, hard to lift.
How to find an antonym
Ask yourself: “What’s the opposite?”
Example: “The soup was hot.” What’s the opposite? Answer: cold, cool, chilly.
A quick test: same or opposite?
For each pair, say whether the words are synonyms (same) or antonyms (opposite):
- begin / start — synonym
- full / empty — antonym
- ancient / modern — antonym
- fast / rapid — synonym
- happy / glad — synonym
