What is an initial blend?
A blend is two consonants that come together at the start of a word, and you hear both sounds. In blue, you hear b and l: bl.
Common initial blends:

How to read a blend
- Say the first sound, then slide into the second: b…l → bl.
- Keep both sounds — don’t drop either.
- Blend the whole word: bl + ue → blue.
Tip: a blend is like two keys pressed at once — you say them almost together.
Blends vs. digraphs
- Blend (bl, gr, sn): two sounds you can hear. blue = /b/ + /l/.
- Digraph (sh, ch, th): two letters, one new sound. ship = one /sh/ sound.
If you’re unsure, stretch the word and count the sounds — a blend keeps two, a digraph becomes one.
How to practice at home
- Blend hunt: find objects that start with a blend (a clock, a flower, a green grape).
- Sliding sounds: say /b/ then /l/ then slide them: b-l → bl.
- Sort cards: sort picture cards by their starting blend.
