Division is multiplication in reverse
The fastest way to divide in third grade isn’t to count — it’s to think of the matching multiplication fact. The problem 24 ÷ 6 is really asking “6 times what equals 24?” Students who see this connection turn division into facts they already know, instead of slow, error-prone counting.
How to use it
For each problem, prompt: “What times the divisor gives this number?” Building fact families — 4 × 6 = 24, 6 × 4 = 24, 24 ÷ 6 = 4, 24 ÷ 4 = 6 — shows how multiplication and division undo each other. Students who found multiplication arrays and facts solid are ready for this.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Teach division as a missing-factor problem: 24 ÷ 6 asks '6 times what is 24?' Connecting to multiplication is faster and more reliable than counting.
🏠 Parent note
For 24 ÷ 6, ask '6 times what equals 24?' The answer (4) is the same as the division answer.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reversing the quotient and divisor
- Guessing instead of using the matching multiplication fact
