Reading for evidence and inference
By fourth grade, comprehension goes beyond finding facts — students must infer ideas the author only implies and back them up with the text. This passage, The School Garden, mixes literal recall (what three things do plants need?) with inference (why list “patience”?) and sequencing, giving a clear read on each student’s comprehension.
How to use it
Require text evidence for every answer, including the open-ended ones. The challenge question asks students to explain why “patience” belongs on the list — a strong answer points back to the two weeks when nothing happened. Have students underline the supporting sentence before they write; it’s the same evidence habit practiced in 3rd grade reading comprehension.
👩🏫 Teacher note
For inference questions, require students to point to the sentence that supports their thinking. 'Answers may vary' does not mean 'anything goes' — it must be grounded in the text.
🏠 Parent note
Encourage your child to look back at the passage for every answer, even the 'why do you think' questions.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Answering from prior knowledge instead of the text
- Giving an opinion without text evidence on inference questions
Answer Key
