What This Worksheet Practices
Students will write the ordered pair (x, y) for points plotted in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane.

Over, then up
The coordinate plane locates a point with an ordered pair (x, y): the first number tells how far to go across (the x-axis), and the second tells how far up (the y-axis). The number-one mistake is reversing them, so the habit “over, then up” keeps the pair in order.
How to use it
Have students put a finger on the origin, move across to the point’s column, then up to its row, and read the two numbers as (x, y). Emphasize that (2, 3) and (3, 2) are different points. This is the foundation for graphing in later grades.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Order matters: count across the x-axis first, then up the y-axis. The phrase 'over, then up' keeps the pair in the right order.
🏠 Parent note
Read across first (the x number), then up (the y number). Write it as (x, y).
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reversing the x and y coordinates
- Counting gridlines from the wrong axis
