Filling a box with unit cubes

Volume measures how much space a solid takes up — the number of unit cubes that fill it. For a rectangular prism, that’s length × width × height. Another way to see it: the bottom layer is length × width (the area), and the height tells how many of those layers stack up.

How to use it

Have students multiply all three dimensions and label the answer in cubic units. Watch for students who add instead of multiply. Builds on area of rectangles.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Volume is the number of unit cubes that fill a solid: length x width x height. The bottom layer is length x width (the area), and the height tells how many layers.

🏠 Parent note

Multiply the three side lengths together. Label the answer in cubic units.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Adding the dimensions instead of multiplying
  • Forgetting cubic units

Answer Key
