Best Books for 2nd Graders
Last updated June 18, 2026
Second grade is when many children move from picture books into early chapter books. The best 2nd grade books have short chapters, plenty of illustrations, repeating characters, and humor or adventure that keeps a 7–8 year old turning pages.
Popular series many 2nd graders enjoy
These widely loved series are written at or near a typical second-grade reading level. Reading levels vary by child, so let your reader try a few:
- Frog and Toad — gentle, funny short stories about friendship.
- Henry and Mudge — a boy and his big dog, in easy early-reader chapters.
- Mercy Watson — a pig who loves buttered toast; bright pictures and big text.
- Nate the Great — short detective mysteries kids can solve along with Nate.
- Magic Tree House — light history and adventure, a favorite first chapter-book series.
- Junie B. Jones — a funny, outspoken narrator with lots of personality.
- Cam Jansen — quick mysteries featuring a girl with a photographic memory.
What to look for in a 2nd grade book
- Short chapters so a child can finish a chunk in one sitting.
- Some pictures to support meaning and keep reading fun.
- Repeating characters across a series, which builds reading stamina and confidence.
- A mix of fiction and nonfiction — many 2nd graders love animal and science books too.
How to support a 2nd grade reader
Read together every day, even after your child can read alone. Take turns reading pages, talk about what’s happening, and ask “why do you think…?” questions to build comprehension — the same skill practiced in our free 2nd grade reading comprehension worksheets. Building sight words and spelling also makes reading smoother and more enjoyable.
