What is a noun?
A noun is a word that names a person, a place, or a thing.
- Person: teacher, sister, doctor
- Place: park, school, beach
- Thing: apple, dog, pencil
Spotting nouns in sentences
Nouns answer the question “who or what is in this sentence?”
“The dog barks.” Who is in the sentence? → the dog (a noun). What does the dog do? → barks (a verb, not a noun).
One or more: plural nouns
When there’s more than one, the noun changes form.

The rules:
- Most words: add -s (cat → cats).
- Words ending in s, x, ch, sh: add -es (box → boxes, wish → wishes).
Nouns are everywhere
Every sentence you write needs at least one noun. When you say what you did today, you’re using nouns for every person, place, and thing: “I played at the park with my friend.”
How to practice at home
- Label the room: put sticky notes on people, places, and things around the house.
- Sort it: say a word and ask “person, place, or thing?”
- Plural game: say one object and have your child say two of them (one apple → two apples).
