A noun names a person, place, or thing
Nouns are the naming words in a sentence. The simple test students can use on any word: “Is it a person, a place, or a thing?” If the answer is yes, it’s a noun. This one question separates nouns from the other big word jobs — action words (verbs) and describing words (adjectives).
How to use it
For each sentence, have students try the test question on the candidate words. Some sentences contain more than one noun (a bird and a tree) — that’s a great chance to talk about how a sentence can name several things. Watch for students who grab the action word (ran, sang) — gently redirect with “but what is the person, place, or thing?”
👩🏫 Teacher note
Give the test question: 'Is it a person, a place, or a thing?' If yes, it's a noun. Contrast with action words (run) and describing words (happy).
🏠 Parent note
Ask: is the word a person, a place, or a thing? If yes, it's a noun.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Choosing an action word (verb) instead of a noun
- Choosing a describing word (adjective) instead of the noun
Answer Key
