In 1st grade, sight words grow from ~40 to ~200 words. The goal changes: not just recognizing words, but reading them instantly so you can focus on meaning.
Common 1st grade sight words:
after, again, could, from, have, her, him, his, how, just, know, let, live, may, of, old, once, over, put, some, take, them, then, were, when, with
Fluency: the real goal
Fluency is reading quickly, accurately, and with expression. Sight words are the engine of fluency — when you don’t have to stop and decode the little words, your brain is free to understand the sentence.
Read sight words in context
- We were at the park.
- I have a new book.
- They said to come over.
The practice routine
- 5 new words a week — see it, spell it, write it, use it.
- Daily review of older words (even 2 minutes works).
- Read real books — sight words stick when met in running text.
- Timed word lists — read the same list aloud and beat last week’s time.
How to practice at home
- Word jar: pull a word from a jar and read it instantly.
- Sight word bingo: make a 3x3 grid of words and read them to find a row.
- Sentence builder: use 2–3 sight words to make a silly sentence.
- Find it: count how many times the and have appear on one book page.
