Words to know in a snap
Sight words are the most common words in English — the, and, you, are — and many don’t follow regular spelling rules, so children learn to recognize them instantly rather than sound them out. Fluent sight-word reading frees up a child’s attention for the harder words and for understanding the story.
How to use it
Read each sentence aloud together, then have your child choose the word from the bank that makes sense, and read the whole sentence back. The goal is speed and meaning, not decoding — if a child pauses to sound out “said,” that’s a word worth practicing on a flashcard until it’s automatic.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Sight words should be read instantly, not sounded out. Read each sentence aloud and have students choose the word that makes sense, then read the whole sentence back.
🏠 Parent note
These words show up everywhere in reading. Read each sentence together and pick the word from the bank that fits.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Sounding out words that should be recognized on sight
- Choosing a word that does not fit the sentence's meaning
