Spelling is patterns, not memory
Good spellers don’t memorize every word — they learn patterns and apply them to new words.
- CVCe: one vowel, one consonant, silent e → the vowel says its name (kite, lake).
- Blends: two consonants keep both sounds (bl, gr, sn).
- Digraphs: two letters, one sound (sh, ch, th).

Tricky words to know
Some words don’t follow the rules — memorize them:
friend, because, said, were, their, would, could, there, our, two
The look-say-cover-write-check method
The single best study routine:
- Look at the word and say it.
- Say the letters out loud.
- Cover the word.
- Write it from memory.
- Check it — and fix any mistakes.
Repeat the missed words a couple more times, then again tomorrow.
A memory trick for tricky parts
Make the hard part unforgettable:
- friend → “a friend to the end” (ends with -end)
- because → “b-e-a-utiful c-a-ts u-se e-very s-aturday” (each letter)
How to practice at home
- Rainbow write: write each word in three colors.
- Sky write: trace the word big in the air with your finger.
- Word sort: sort the week’s words by pattern (silent e, digraphs, tricky).
- Sentence use: use each word in a sentence so it has meaning.
