What are commonly confused words?
Some words sound alike or look alike but have different meanings — and even adults mix them up. Learn each pair’s meaning and you’ll write more accurately.
affect / effect
- affect (verb) = to change or influence: Rain can affect your plans.
- effect (noun) = the result: The storm had a big effect on the city.
than / then
- than = used for comparing: A cheetah is faster than a lion.
- then = at that time, next: Finish your work, then you can play.
loose / lose
- loose = not tight: My shoelace is loose.
- lose = to misplace or not win: Don’t lose your keys.
accept / except
- accept = to receive or agree to: I accept your invitation.
- except = other than, but: Everyone came except Mia.
its / it’s
- its = belonging to it: The dog wagged its tail.
- it’s = it is: It’s time to go.

- Than = Tells the Trade-off (compare) · Then = Time
- Loose has an extra o, like “too big to be tight” · Lose = you slipped up and lost
