What is a context clue?

A context clue is information around an unknown word that helps you figure out its meaning. You don’t always need a dictionary — the sentence often tells you.

The four kinds of clues

1. Definition clue

The meaning is stated right in the sentence, usually after a comma or the words which means or that is.

“The island was arid, which means it got almost no rain.”

2. Synonym clue

A word with the same meaning appears nearby.

“The gigantic tree — truly enormous — shaded the yard.”

3. Example clue

Examples point you toward the meaning.

“Nocturnal animals, such as owls and bats, come out at night.”

4. Inference clue

You reason it out from the situation described.

“Her hands shook as she stepped on stage — she felt great trepidation.”

The three-step method

  1. Pause at the unknown word — don’t skip it.
  2. Look around: is there a definition, synonym, or example nearby?
  3. Guess and check: does your guess make sense in the sentence?

  4. A nocturnal animal, such as an owl or a bat, is active at night. What does 'nocturnal' mean?

    💡 'Such as' introduces examples.

  5. The enormous tree shaded the whole yard. Give a synonym clue for 'enormous'.

💡 The tree shaded the whole yard — that's very big.
