What are prefixes and suffixes?
A prefix is a word part added to the beginning of a root word. A suffix is added to the end. Both change the meaning of the root.
- re + view = review (view again)
- care + -ful = careful (full of care)
Common prefixes to know

The break-it-apart method
- Find the root — the base word that carries the core meaning.
- Find the prefix — what it adds to the beginning.
- Find the suffix — what it adds to the end.
- Put it together and check the meaning makes sense.
Example: unhelpful → un- (not) + help (root) + -ful (full of) = not full of help.
