What is a beginning sound?
The beginning sound is the first sound you hear when you say a word. Moon begins with /m/. Sun begins with /s/. Hearing that first sound is the very first step in learning to read.
How to hear the first sound
- Say the word slowly.
- Stretch the first sound: m-m-m-moon.
- Name the letter that makes that sound.
Example: “c-c-c-cat” → the first sound is /k/ → the letter c.
Matching sounds to letters
Once you can hear the sound, match it to its letter. Practice with everyday words:

Sounds that are close
Some sounds are easy to confuse: b/p, d/t, m/n, f/v. Say the words side by side (bat / pat) and feel the difference. It helps to look at your mouth in a mirror.
How to practice at home
- Sound hunt: “Find something in the room that starts with /s/.”
- Sorting game: say two words and ask, “Do these start with the same sound?”
- Letter match: say a word and have your child pick the matching letter card.
