More sounds, same skill

This second set focuses on consonants that didn’t appear the first time — g, h, n, p, r, w, j, k — so children practice isolating the first sound of a word across more of the alphabet. The skill is the same: hear the beginning sound, then write the letter that makes it.

How to use it

Say each word slowly and stretch the first sound (“gggg-ate”). Ask your child to say the sound before writing, so they map sound to letter. Watch for close pairs like g/k and n/m. Pairs with beginning sounds set 1.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Stretch the first sound of each word, then have students say the sound before writing. Focus on the letters that didn't appear in set 1.

🏠 Parent note

Say the word, stretch the first sound, and ask which letter makes it. Then write it.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Writing a letter for the ending sound instead of the beginning
  • Confusing letters with similar sounds (g/k, n/m)

Answer Key

The answer key lists the beginning letter for each word.
