What makes words rhyme?
Two words rhyme when their ending sounds match. Cat and hat rhyme because they both end with the sound -at. The beginning can be different — that’s the fun part.
- cat / hat
- dog / frog
- sun / run
How to hear a rhyme
- Say both words out loud.
- Focus on the end of each word.
- Ask: “Do they end with the same sound?”
Example: “cat… hat… cat… hat” — yes! Both end with -at.
Rhyming is not “starts the same”
Cat and car don’t rhyme — they start alike but end differently. Rhyme is about the ending sound, not the beginning.
Word families make rhymes
Words that rhyme often belong to the same word family — they share the same ending:

How to practice at home
- Songs and nursery rhymes: point out the rhyming pairs as you sing.
- Finish the rhyme: “I see a cat wearing a ___” (hat!).
- Rhyme sort: give cards and sort them into rhyming piles.
