Smallest first, biggest last

Ordering numbers is comparing with more than two numbers. The trick is the same: compare the tens first, and only look at the ones if the tens are equal. The smallest (least) number goes first and the biggest (greatest) goes last.

How to use it

Have students compare the tens digit first, then the ones. Watch for ordering by the ones digit (putting 18 before 8). Builds on comparing numbers.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Compare the tens digit first; only look at the ones if the tens match. The least (smallest) number goes first.

🏠 Parent note

Look at the tens first. The smallest number goes first, the biggest last.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Ordering by the ones digit instead of the tens
  • Reversing least and greatest
