Compare the hundreds first

Comparing three-digit numbers is a place-value skill: start at the hundreds and work right. Only move to the tens (then ones) if the higher place is equal. So 345 < 354 because the hundreds match but 4 tens is less than 5 tens.

How to use it

Have students line the numbers up and compare one place at a time, left to right. The “open mouth points to the bigger number” image helps them aim > and <. Builds on comparing 2-digit numbers and place value to the hundreds.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Compare left to right: hundreds first; only move to tens (then ones) if the higher place is equal. Line the numbers up to make the place values clear.

🏠 Parent note

Look at the hundreds first. If they're the same, compare the tens, then the ones.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Comparing ones before hundreds
  • Pointing the symbol the wrong way
