Subtraction is the other side of addition
Every subtraction fact has a matching addition fact: 7 − 3 = 4 because 4 + 3 = 7. Students who know their sums to 10 already know their differences — they just need to see the connection. That’s why this page pairs naturally with addition facts.
How to use it
Use the number line to count back from the larger number, or flip the problem into an addition question (“what plus 3 makes 7?”). Watch for the off-by-one error of counting the starting number. Once differences within 10 are quick, move on to subtraction within 20.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Link each subtraction to its addition fact: 7 − 3 = 4 because 4 + 3 = 7. Fact families turn known sums into known differences.
🏠 Parent note
Start at the bigger number on the number line and hop back. Or ask: what plus this number makes the total?
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Counting back but including the starting number
- Counting up when they meant to count back
