Two letters, two sounds
A consonant blend is two consonants whose sounds both stay (st, fr, cl, gr). That’s different from a digraph like sh or ch, where two letters make a single new sound. Hearing both sounds in a blend helps students read and spell hundreds of common words.
How to use it
Stretch the beginning of each word so your child can hear the two sounds — “sssst-op.” Then write both letters of the blend. Watch for kids who write just one letter, and for blend-vs-digraph mix-ups. This pairs with silent e as core second-grade phonics.
👩🏫 Teacher note
In a blend, you hear BOTH letters (st, fr, cl). Stretch the start of the word so students notice the two sounds, unlike a digraph where two letters make one sound.
🏠 Parent note
Say the start of the word slowly. In a blend like 'st', you can hear both the /s/ and the /t/.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Writing only one letter of the blend
- Confusing blends (two sounds) with digraphs like sh (one sound)
