Words that stand in for nouns
A pronoun takes the place of a noun so we don’t repeat the same word over and over. Instead of “Maria ran. Maria was fast,” we say “Maria ran. She was fast.” He, she, it, we, and they are everyday pronouns young writers use.
Choosing the right pronoun

Worked example
“The puppy wagged its tail. ___ was happy.” Puppy = one animal → It was happy.
How to solve each item
Match the pronoun to who or what it replaces: he/she for people, it for things and animals, we for a group that includes you, they for more than one. Read the sentence with each choice — the correct one sounds natural.
