Same ending, new words

A word family is a group of words that end the same way — cat, hat, and bat all belong to the -at family. When students know a word family, they can read new words by changing just the first sound.

How to use it

Say each word aloud and listen for the ending, then write it in the right box. Do CVC words (missing vowel) first if the middle vowel is still tricky. Then keep rhyming practice going with rhyming words set 2.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Words in a family share the same ending, so students only change the first sound: c-at, h-at, m-at. This builds reading fluency fast.

🏠 Parent note

Help your child say each word and listen for the same ending sound, then write it in the right box.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Mixing words that start the same instead of ending the same
  • Guessing without reading the whole word

Answer Key
