What does comparing mean?

Comparing is deciding which number is bigger, smaller, or the same. When you say “I have more crayons than you,” you’re comparing.

The symbols

SymbolNameMeaning
>greater thanbigger than
<less thansmaller than
=equal tothe same as

Memory trick: the open mouth of the symbol faces the bigger number.

8 > 5 (the mouth opens toward 8) 3 < 7 (the mouth opens toward 7)

Comparing with tens and ones

If two numbers have the same number of digits, compare the tens first, then the ones.

23 vs 32: compare tens → 2 vs 3 → 32 is greater. 27 vs 24: same tens (2), compare ones → 7 vs 4 → 27 is greater.

More digits means a bigger number

Any two-digit number is greater than any one-digit number.

12 > 9, because 12 has a tens digit.

Ordering numbers

To put numbers in order from smallest to largest, compare them two at a time.

17, 12, 19 → smallest is 12, then 17, then 19 → 12, 17, 19

How to practice at home

  • More or fewer: “Which pile has more? Which has fewer?”
