Fractions — 3rd Grade Lesson

What is a fraction?
A fraction is a part of a whole. It’s written with two numbers:
- The numerator (top) — how many parts we have.
- The denominator (bottom) — how many equal parts the whole is split into.
3/4 = 3 parts out of 4 equal parts
Equal parts matter
The parts must be equal. Half of a pizza split into two equal slices is 1/2. Splitting into four equal slices makes 1/4.
Fractions of a shape
Fractions name parts of shapes:
- A circle cut into 2 equal parts → 1/2 is one half.
- A rectangle cut into 3 equal parts → 1/3 is one third.
- A square cut into 4 equal parts → 1/4 is one fourth.
Equivalent fractions
Equivalent fractions name the same amount. With a model, two fractions are equivalent when they cover the same space.
1/2 = 2/4 (two fourths cover the same as one half)
Comparing fractions
- Same denominator? Compare numerators: 3/5 > 2/5.
- Same numerator? The smaller denominator is the bigger fraction: 1/2 > 1/4.
Fractions on a number line
Fractions sit between whole numbers. Halfway between 0 and 1 is 1/2; halfway between 1 and 2 is 1 1/2.
How to practice at home
- Cut food into equal parts: share a pizza or a sandwich and name the fractions.
- Fold paper into halves, fourths, and eighths.
- Draw fraction bars for 1/2 vs 1/4 to see which is bigger.
- Fraction hunt: point to half, third, or quarter of everyday objects.
