A fraction is shaded parts over total parts
Before students compute with fractions, they need to read them from a picture. The key idea that trips kids up: the denominator is the total number of equal parts, not the number left unshaded. A bar split into 4 equal parts with 3 shaded is 3/4 — three of the four equal pieces.
How to use it
Have students count all the equal parts first (that’s the bottom number), then count the shaded parts (the top number). Emphasize equal — fractions only work when the parts are the same size. Once naming fractions from a model is solid, students are ready for equivalent fractions and comparing fractions.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Stress that the denominator is the TOTAL number of equal parts, not the unshaded ones. Have students count all parts first, then the shaded ones.
🏠 Parent note
The bottom number is how many equal parts there are in all. The top number is how many are shaded.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Writing shaded parts over unshaded parts instead of total parts
- Counting parts that are not equal
