Putting fractions on a number line shows that a fraction is a number with a place between 0 and 1. The number of equal spaces from 0 to 1 is the denominator; the number of spaces to the point is the numerator. The classic trap is counting tick marks instead of spaces — there’s always one more tick than space.
How to use it
Have students count the equal spaces from 0 to 1 (the bottom number), then count spaces up to the point (the top number). Builds on naming fractions of a shape and prepares students for equivalent fractions.
