Use the doubles you know
Doubles (5 + 5, 8 + 8) are some of the first facts students memorize - and they unlock the near-doubles right next to them. A doubles-plus-one fact like 6 + 7 is just the double 6 + 6 (12) and one more (13). Spotting the hidden double turns a hard fact into an easy one.
How to use it
Have students find the double inside each near-double, then add one more. This builds on addition facts to 10 and pairs with the make-ten strategy.
👩🏫 Teacher note
A near-double like 6 + 7 is just 6 + 6 (12) plus one more (13). Have students name the double they see hiding inside the problem.
🏠 Parent note
If you see 6 + 7, think '6 + 6 is 12, and one more is 13.'
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Adding two instead of one for a near-double
- Not recognizing a near-double
