Three numbers, four facts
A fact family is a set of three numbers that make two addition facts and two subtraction facts. The biggest number is always the whole (the sum); the other two are the parts. Fact families are one of the most powerful ideas in early math because they show that subtraction is just addition undone — if you know 3 + 4 = 7, you already know 7 − 4 = 3.
How to use it
Have students identify the whole (the biggest number) first, then build the two addition facts and the two subtraction facts. Connecting the four facts turns known sums into known differences. Builds on addition facts to 10 and subtraction within 10.
👩🏫 Teacher note
The largest number is always the whole (the sum); the other two are the parts. Fact families make subtraction easier by tying it to addition.
🏠 Parent note
The biggest number goes alone on one side. The two smaller numbers add up to it, and you can subtract either one from it.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Writing the subtraction facts with the numbers in the wrong order
- Forgetting that the largest number is always the whole (the sum)
