Reading a graph, not just numbers
A bar graph turns a table of numbers into a picture you can compare at a glance. Second graders learn to read a value (trace the top of a bar across to the number scale), find the most and least, and answer comparison questions like “how many more” — which is subtraction in disguise.
How to use it
Have students put a finger on the top of a bar and slide across to the number axis. Remind them that “how many more/fewer” means subtract, and “in all” means add. This pairs with comparing numbers.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Have students trace from the top of each bar across to the number axis. 'How many more' questions are subtraction; 'in all' questions are addition.
🏠 Parent note
Look at how tall each bar is and read across to the number on the side. To compare two bars, subtract.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reading the bar height against the wrong gridline
- Adding instead of subtracting for 'how many more'
Answer Key
