Say it, then write it

Writing a number in words is really just writing what you say: 230 is “two hundred thirty.” Build it by place value - the hundreds word first, then the word for the tens and ones. The tricky parts are spelling (forty, ninety) and remembering you don’t need “and” between the hundreds and the rest.

How to use it

Have students say the number aloud first, then write each word. Keep a small word bank of tricky spellings handy. Builds on place value to the hundreds and connects to expanded form.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Build word form by place: hundreds word, then the tens-and-ones word. A small word bank of tricky spellings (forty, ninety, hundred) helps.

🏠 Parent note

Say the number out loud, then write exactly what you say: 230 is 'two hundred thirty.'

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Writing 'one hundred and five' as 105 versus 100 5
  • Misspelling teen and -ty number words
