Building bigger numbers

Three-digit numbers extend the same idea students met with tens and ones: each place is worth ten of the place to its right. Ten ones make a rod; ten rods make a hundred-flat. Seeing a hundred-flat as a 10×10 grid helps students believe that 100 really is “ten tens,” which is the foundation for all the regrouping they’ll do later.

How to use it

Count in place-value order: hundreds first, then tens, then ones (200… 230… 234). Pay special attention to numbers like 205, where there are no tens — students must hold that place with a zero. Missing that zero (and writing 25) is the most common error at this level. This builds on tens and ones from first grade.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Count in order — hundreds (100, 200), then tens, then ones. Spend time on numbers with a zero (like 304) so students learn to hold the place with a zero.

🏠 Parent note

Big squares are hundreds, tall rods are tens, small squares are ones. Count them in that order.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Forgetting a zero placeholder (writing 34 instead of 304)
  • Mixing up which blocks are hundreds versus tens
