Perimeter is the distance around
Perimeter is the total distance around a shape — found by adding up the lengths of all its sides. For a rectangle that means all four sides (both lengths and both widths), not just two. Keeping perimeter (around the edge) separate from area (the space inside) is the main goal at this grade.
How to use it
Have students label every side and add them all. For regular shapes, multiplying a side length by the number of sides is a shortcut. Pairs with area by counting squares and the area and perimeter worksheet.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Perimeter is the distance around the edge. For a rectangle, that's all four sides (two lengths and two widths). Have students label each side and add them all.
🏠 Parent note
Add up the length of every side. For a rectangle, add all four sides.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Adding only two sides of a rectangle
- Confusing perimeter with area
