The easiest table - and it’s place value
Multiplying by 10 is the simplest table because of place value: each one becomes a ten, so the digit shifts left and a zero fills the ones place. That’s why 10 x 7 = 70. Teaching it as place value (not just “add a zero”) pays off later when students multiply by 100 and 1,000.
How to use it
Have students write the number and add a zero, while understanding why it works. The 10s also anchor the 9 times table (x10 minus one group) and pair with the 5s. Part of the full times tables set.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Multiplying by 10 puts a zero in the ones place because each one becomes a ten. Frame it as place value, not a trick, so it transfers to multiplying by 100 later.
🏠 Parent note
To multiply by 10, write the number and add a zero. 10 x 7 = 70.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Adding a zero in the wrong place
- Thinking 'add a zero' changes the digit itself
