Split 12 into 10 and 2

The 12 times table rounds out the set, and it’s easier than it looks once students split 12 into 10 + 2. Every 12s fact is a 10s fact plus a 2s fact: 12 x 7 is 70 + 14 = 84. This “break a factor into friendly parts” move is the distributive property - a strategy students will use for years.

How to use it

Have students multiply by 10 and by 2, then add. This builds on the 10 times table and the 2 times table. Dozens (eggs, packs) make great real-world practice. Completes the full times tables set.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

12 x n = (10 x n) + (2 x n): 12 x 7 is 70 + 14 = 84. This 'split a factor' strategy is the distributive property in action.

🏠 Parent note

Multiply by 10 and by 2, then add. 12 x 7: 70 + 14 = 84.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Adding the parts incorrectly after splitting
  • Confusing 12 x 7 (84) and 12 x 8 (96)
