By the end of third grade, students aim to know their multiplication facts through 12 x 12 quickly and accurately. Mixing the tables together — instead of drilling one at a time — is the real test of recall, and it’s how facts show up on tests and in everyday problems.
How to use it
Encourage answering from memory first, then reach for a helper strategy on the tricky ones: doubles (7x8 = 7x4 doubled), the nines (9x6 = 60 − 6), or building from a neighbor (6x7 = 6x6 + 6). This builds on facts 0-5 and arrays.

Mixed facts (not one table at a time) show what students truly recall. Teach helper strategies: 7x8 is 7x4 doubled; 9s are ten-times minus one group.
🏠 Parent note
If a fact is tricky, build it from one you know: 6x7 is 6x6 (36) plus one more 6 (42).
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Confusing products of nearby facts (7x8 vs 7x9)
- Guessing instead of using a known fact to derive a nearby one
