Decimals are another way to write fractions
Decimals are just fractions with denominators of 10 and 100: 0.7 = 7/10 and 0.07 = 7/100. The most common mistake is judging a decimal by how many digits it has — instead, compare place by place after lining up the decimal points.
How to use it
Use money as a bridge: 0.7 of a dollar is 70¢, while 0.07 is just 7¢. Builds toward 5th grade decimal word problems.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Link decimals to fractions: 0.7 = 7/10 and 0.07 = 7/100. To compare, line up the decimal points and compare place by place — not by the number of digits.
🏠 Parent note
Money helps: 0.7 of a dollar is 70 cents, and 0.07 is 7 cents — so 0.7 is much more.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Thinking 0.5 is less than 0.25 because 25 > 5
- Mixing up tenths and hundredths places
