One more place value to manage
Multiplying a three-digit number by one digit uses the exact same steps as two-digit multiplication — there’s just one more column. The skill that matters most is carrying carefully: after multiplying a digit, add any number that was regrouped from the column before.
How to use it
Work right to left — ones, tens, then hundreds — and remind students to add the carry after each multiplication. A quick estimate keeps answers honest: 214 × 2 should be around 400. This steps up from 2-digit by 1-digit and prepares students for 2-digit by 2-digit.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Work right to left and remind students to ADD the carried number after multiplying the next digit. A quick estimate (e.g., 214 × 2 is about 400) checks reasonableness.
🏠 Parent note
Multiply each digit by the bottom number, starting from the right, and carry when needed — just like 2-digit multiplication, with one more column.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Forgetting to add the regrouped (carried) number
- Not multiplying every digit by the bottom number
