Add the pieces, not the names

The whole trick of adding fractions with the same denominator: the denominator names the size of the piece, and that size doesn’t change. Two fifths plus one fifth is three fifths — you’re just counting more pieces of the same size. The classic error is adding the bottoms too (2/5 + 1/5 = 3/10), which would magically shrink the pieces.

How to use it

Say each problem in words — “two fifths plus one fifth” — so students hear that only the count of pieces changes. Point out sums like 2/3 + 1/3 that make one whole (3/3). This builds on naming fractions of a shape and pairs with equivalent and comparing fractions.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

Anchor it in meaning: 2 fourths plus 1 fourth is 3 fourths — the size of the piece (the denominator) never changes, you just count more of them.

🏠 Parent note

Add only the top numbers. The bottom number stays the same, because the size of each piece doesn't change.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Adding the denominators as well as the numerators
  • Forgetting that the denominator names the size of the piece and stays the same
