Bring the point straight up
Dividing a decimal by a whole number is long division with one extra rule: bring the decimal point straight up into the quotient, directly above where it sits in the dividend. Then divide exactly as you would with whole numbers.
How to use it
Place the decimal point in the answer first, then divide. Estimating keeps placement honest — 4.5 ÷ 5 should be less than 1, so 0.9 makes sense (9 would not). Builds on long division and multiplying decimals.
👩🏫 Teacher note
When dividing a decimal by a whole number, bring the decimal point straight up into the quotient, then divide as usual. Estimating first checks the placement.
🏠 Parent note
Put the decimal point in the answer right above the one in the number, then divide normally.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Dropping the decimal point in the quotient
- Not aligning the decimal point with the dividend
