Multiplying decimals is whole-number multiplication with one extra step: place the decimal point. Multiply the digits as if the points weren’t there, then count the total decimal places in both factors and put the point that many places from the right. So 0.2 × 0.4 = 0.08 (two decimal places).
How to use it
Have students estimate first (0.2 × 0.4 is small, near 0), multiply the digits, then count decimal places to place the point. Builds on adding & subtracting decimals and leads to dividing decimals.
