It all comes down to lining up the point
Adding and subtracting decimals uses the same steps as whole numbers, with one rule on top: line up the decimal points, not the last digits. When the decimals have different lengths (0.5 and 0.25), write 0.5 as 0.50 so every place has a partner. Then add or subtract column by column and bring the decimal point straight down.
How to use it
Have students stack the numbers by the decimal point and fill empty places with zeros before they compute. This is the same logic as lining up place value in whole-number addition — and the same “line up the point” idea makes money math (dollars and cents) work. Builds on comparing decimals.
👩🏫 Teacher note
The whole skill is alignment: line up the decimal points, not the right-hand digits. Writing 0.5 as 0.50 keeps columns even.
🏠 Parent note
Stack the numbers so the decimal points line up, add a zero if one number is shorter, then add or subtract as usual.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Lining up the last digits instead of the decimal points
- Forgetting to bring the decimal point straight down into the answer
