Finding the missing part

A missing-addend problem like 6 + ? = 10 flips addition around: students know the whole and one part, and have to find the other part. They can count up from the first number to the total, or think of it as subtraction (10 - 6). Either way, it builds the part-part-whole thinking behind fact families.

How to use it

Have students count up from the given number to the total, or subtract. Watch for kids who add the two visible numbers out of habit. This leads naturally into fact families.

👩‍🏫 Teacher note

A missing addend is a count-on or a subtraction in disguise: 6 + ? = 10 asks 'how many more from 6 to 10?' This builds the part-part-whole idea.

🏠 Parent note

Count up from the first number to the total. 6 + ? = 10: count 7, 8, 9, 10 - that's 4 more.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Adding the two given numbers instead of finding the missing part
  • Counting on incorrectly
