First clocks: o’clock and half past
First graders learn to read a clock at the two easiest times: o’clock (the minute hand on 12) and half past (the minute hand on 6). The key habits are telling the short hour hand from the long minute hand, and noticing that at half past the hour hand is between two numbers.
How to use it
Have students read the hour first (which number did the short hand pass?), then the minute hand. Once o’clock and half past are easy, move on to telling time to the half hour and 5 minutes in 2nd grade.
👩🏫 Teacher note
Start with o'clock (minute hand on 12), then half past (minute hand on 6). At half past, the hour hand sits between two numbers but the time uses the earlier hour.
🏠 Parent note
Short hand is the hour, long hand is the minutes. Long hand on 12 is o'clock; on 6 is half past.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Mixing up the hour and minute hands
- Reading the hour as the next hour at half past
